Statute of limitations for theft over $1000 18 years ago
I am looking for information regarding a theft that I committed 18 years ago, theft over $1,000.00. This was a workplace theft, over a period of 3 years, which was never prosecuted. Now, I am due to go in for a polygraph regarding a job application with a police agency (Canada), and am curious about the statute of limitations, and would like to know whether I can still be prosecuted. I have never been charged or convicted of a crime, and have not done anything since then that would be suspect.

So I take it you stole, but were never charged?

Theft would either be under or over 5,000 and I believe both can be charged as an indictable offence which has no SOL.

If you haven't been charged in 18 years, it is doubtful you ever will be.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I stole, but was never charged. Actually 18 years ago, it was theft under or over $1,000.00. Just wondering if the SOL was different back then, and if it would apply for that time, or if today's would apply. And, also if they would revert back to the 334(a)cc $1000 or $5000? Any idea??

You would be charged with whatever the laws 18 years ago said.

So it if was 1,000 18 years ago, then that is what you will be charged with.

And I would bet that theft over 1,000 would have been an indictable offence, but I am not sure on that nor if there was once a SOL.
