As soon as the child becomes 18 ( and is out of school) they may chooe which parent to live with all by thierself.
Before that, normally after age 12 they are allowed to testify in court ( some judges will allow younger) The parent that does not have custody will have to file a motion in court, there they will show cause ( legal reason) why the child should be with them instead, the child can testify in court as to what they want. The judge does not have to do what the child wants, but can rule as to what they believe is still the best.
It is just a myth that a child can just decide where to live on their own, since the child would use that against the parents to try and get away with things, that would never be acceptable.
Hello kb:
A child can't ever decide who he wants to live with. The judge will listen to a child, but the child can't choose.
