I have naturally black hair. Yesterday on a whim, I decided I wanted to go red. So I went and bought L'Oreal Feria hair color in "Ruby Rush", which is one of their Power Reds shade, formulated specifically for darker hair.

The color shows, and I love it... the problem is, it only shows on my roots. The ends of my hair is STILL BLACK and some parts of the shaft is still black. However, the roots are a nice red color, just like on the box. Luckily for me, it's not a big shade difference between the red part and the black part, just two or three shades different.

So it's no question that I should do something to fix this situation. Now, before I go out and do something that will possibly make it worse, I was wondering if anyone can help me. My plan is to go out and buy the same haircolor and just color over the black parts only, leaving my red roots alone. I don't know if that will work, but it makes sense to me. I'm going to wait the recommended 48 hours, to let the color fully settle into my hair, but after that, I'm thinking of doing the color-over on the parts that is still black.

What do you think? Am I going to regret this? Is it going to work at all? If anyone can help, I will be extremely EXTREMELY grateful!

Sweetie, if you want to go from black to red hair, you will need to pre-lighten your hair first and then apply the desired hair color. When you apply a box of at-home color, it will result in an uneven or unpleasant color. I recommend that you go to a salon and have them do a corrective color. They will be able to achieve the color you want, and your hair will look one even color.

I did visit a salon today to ask them what I should do. The colorist told me he would have to do a bleach all over my hair THEN put in the red color. He said he wouldn't even recommend going red because it's the most quick to fade. He said his recommendation would be a full foil red. So I'll still have my natural black haircolor with tiny red highlights on them. He said that's the way to go because (1) it's lower maintenance and (2) it's not going to be as noticeable when it fades. With that in mind, I'm thinking I might want to do a different color. I want to do something for the summer but I know that no matter what, I will need to use bleach on my hair because of the black. I guess what happened was, my hair is dryer on the bottom layers than at the top. That's why the color shows up at the top, but not on the bottom.
