I own a whirlpool dryer and when I went to turn the dryer on, it would not turn on. Instead, when I turn the dryer it buzzes and the drum will not spin. I believe my problem is the motor and I have been in the process of taking the dryer apart until I came upon the motor. I am unsure of how to disconnect and take the motor off. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

The motor is simple to get out. I assume you already took everything else off. The top, the drum out, and all you see is the motor and a gutted out dryer. Now to get the motor off, you need to put some vice grips on one motor shaft end. That would be the end where the drum belt goes on. Once you have the vise grips tightly on that shaft end, get an adjustable wrench and you should see part of the blower wheel connected to the other side of the motor shaft. (This is towards the back of the dryer.) Now put you adjustable wrench on that part of the blower wheel. ( It's a squar shape plastic end of the blower wheel). So far you should have vice grips on the front of the motor shaft and a adjustable wrench on the other side of the motor, that is actually on the squar piece of the blower wheel end. Now you ready to take the blower wheel off the motor shaft. With your right hand grab the vice grips and with your left hand grab the adjustable wrech. Now you want to turn your right hand ClOCKWISE (The vice Grips) and your left hand COUNTER CLOCKWISE ( The adjustable wrench) to loosen the blower wheel off the motor shaft. You have to turn both at the same time. (Be careful because there are times when the plastic part of the blower wheel breaks and the you have to go to the back of the dryer and chisle in the very middle of the blower wheel and pull the blower wheel out and you will need to buy a new blower wheel) Once you loosened the blower wheel from the shaft, go to the back of the dryer and take the back panle off. Once that panel is off, you should be looking at a metal casing that runs up to the top. (This is where you screen goes in) That metal casing is held by 4 screws at the bottom. (I hope this is the whirlpool dryer with the lint screen is on the top, otherwise I just wrote all this for nothing... :eek:.. ) Take that metal case and pull it out. Then take you blower wheel out. Now go back to the motor and unclip the black clips that hold the motor in place. (Use a flat headed screw driver to un-clip then and to clip them back in place.) Now remove your old motor and REMEMBER! When you put the new motor in, you motor connection for you wire harness should be in a 7 o'clock position otherwise the clips won't won't snap in place. Pretty much that all, just put the new motor in, snap the clips in place. And when you put the blower wheel back on, just tighten to a nice snug.. DONT CRANK ON IT CUZ YOU COULD BREAK THAT SQUAR PIECE OF THE BLOWER WHEEL. Just turn the wrenches the opposite way from above to tighten the wheel on the motor shaft. And just put everything else back together and that should be it...

I am a tech also... even though if you clean the lint off, there dryer never spinned and the motor just buzzes or hums like they said.. Its sounds to me to replace the motor though.. Since you know how to get to the motor already, ohm out the motor with an ohm meter. Your motor has a connection for you wire harness, unplug the harness and ohm out your motor. They should be numbered on the connection. Put one probe on your 4m and the other probe on you 5m. You should read 2 or more ohms. If its 1 ohm or less they your motor is bad. Also check from your 6m to 4m on the connection. If its also 1 ohm or less then you have a bad motor. Ohming those terminals, you should have above 2 ohm from 4m to 5m... and from your 6m to 4m..
