Ask Me Help Desk - Computer recovery

I have a HP dv 5000 laptop, less than one year old. It has crashed two times now, and in my frustration, I have done the PC recovery option. So, it sets it back to factory settings. Is there any way to make the computer recover to a later date? So, now, I have to redo everything on the computer, registration and all. Also, what can I do to keep up with the general health of the computer (aka so it won't crash again). My solution right now is to throw the (*&(#&$%$@# thing out the window. Any and all suggestions and enlightening would be appreciated.
I do have norton security, iTunes, and photos on the computer (well, I did) other than that, I don't play games on it, just pretty much do homework, email, etc.

I know exactly how you feel, you can set your own restore date by going into start, all programs, accessories, system tools and then system restore when you open it, it asks you if you want to create a new restore date. I have both ad adware and avg both free, had bad experience with norton, it lost me a computer but others give it glowing reports lol hope this has been of help, take care, love and peace anne x

Thanks Anne. I looked at that process, can I set a date at anytime? And, if I do set a date, can I keep updating it?
Also, I have three recovery discs that I made early on when I got my computer. What are they for? I put one in when my computer crashed, and it got the recovery page up, but then it never asked for it again.

All comps used to come with recovery discs but these days you have to create your own, I think they are just that, just meant to insert to restore your system should it go down completely, if you are worried I think maybe just back everything up on disc but the system restore does that best so should not be necessary, unless your system refuses to go on then it should not be necessary to restore each time, you can create a restore point when you want, Is also wise to just run your virus checker once is back on. Since it's a laptop, I hope you're not covering up the vents. That could cause a malfunction. If your HP is like mine, then it should have rubber feet to support it on a table.

Also, try running Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup on your computer. Both will assist in clearing up space and save some time in finding files or whatever you have.

If it persistently happens, then consider a new hard-drive, or sending it to the HP factory for a better one, if you're still within warranty.
