I am in the middle of adopting a 4 yr old Daschund that was left at a shelter.They said they think the dog had been abused before because it had a lot of issues,that the dog has gotten better with now.The dog is amazing,he is loving,kind and well behaved.He loves people especially women,but every time he sees kids he barks and lunges at them.He has never bit anyone.My problem is I have 2 kids and I'm not sure what to do.We went to see the dog and he barked at my son when he saw him but my son was able to pet him.While my son was petting him,the dog was shaking and acted very nervous but didn't do anything,the second time my son went to pet him he barked at him and lunged towards him,the dog was pulled back of course but we don't know what would have happened if the dog had been left to do what it was going to do.I love this dog and really want to adopt him,I'm just scared of not knowing why the dog is doing this and what it might do.I could really use some advice on what to do,and if this behavior could be fixed or if the dog might be cross with kids.Thanks

Doxies are a hard breed with kids. If they are exposed to them early and are in a loving home they tend to be fine. However, I would have reservations about adopting a doxie that has been abused into a house with children, especially young children. Especially if they have already shown aggression towards a child. This is just my opionion though


You always need to be cautious with any dog around small children.

I have a friend who has a doxie. The dog really loves her kids but she was adopted when she was a puppy. I understand that you really like the dog but maybe you should get a different dog. What if one of your kids does something that triggers the doggs memory? What if he bites you. I think the well fair of your kids is most important. Do you really want your son to have to deal with a dog barking and growing at him every time he walks in the door. Maybe look for a differnent puppy or dog.

Doxies are cute little dogs. I think we are all fascinated by them. They are on a long list of dogs I have wanted at one time. I often advise following your heart on adopting a dog, but maybe not in this case. I think you can still adopt a Dachshund, but best not that one.
