Probability of a President of Student Council
    Student Council

    Girls- 30
    Boys- 20
    8th graders- 25
    7th graders- 15
    6th graders- 10

The table shows the members of the student council. Suppose a student is randomly selected as the president. Write as a fraction in simplest form.

What is the probability that a girl will be chosen as president?

The probability that an event will happen can typically be found by determining how many possible outcomes there are and dividing that into the number of outcomes that meet the conditions you are asking about. In this case you have a total of 50 student council members - that's the denominator (i.e. you know that no matter who gets picked it has to be one of those 50 students). 30 of the students are girls, the selection of any one of whom meets the criteria, so use 30 of the numerator. Now you have a fraction to simplify to its simplest form.
