Hi we moved into our house about a year ago and every so often (more so when its warm) we get a drainy smell in the house. Today I have followed the internal stench pipe into the loft and found that it was covered with floor boards that the previous owner had put down. I have removed the boards and found the pipe in the loft. There was also another pipe covered up that is for the extractor fan in the bathroom. I have found a pipe that looks a bit like an air outlet hose for a tumble dryer that offers good ventilation through the roof but is not connected to anything. Should this connect to the stench pipe or the extractor fan? My only problem is the stench pipe is capped off so I cannot connect the vent pipe I've found to this... Will the stench pipe breath normally now I have removed all the board and installation from around it and stop the smell? The pipe is quite a depth down from the loft so its hard to reach I'm just wondering how builders/plumbers configur them?

NO! They should be exhausted outside.

Not if it's capped off. Leaving it capped will prevent the fixture traps from venting once you drain the fixture. The capped vent should be run out the roof or revented back into the main roof vent. You do have a vent running out the roof don't you? Regards, Tom

No the pipe itself stops in the loft and is capped off but is quite far down in the floor so I can't reach it to see if it has a breather on it.. The vent pipe I've found disconnected runs out to the roof so I'm guessing this should connect to the pipe? Or should it connect to the extractor fan from the bathroom?

Connect the capped off vent to the vent that runs out the roof. Do not connecxt a dryer vent or the bathroom exhaust fan to any of your house vents. The vents are for drainage only. Regards, Tom
