    Possible PCOS and very worried
Hi, I've just been told by my gyn. Doctor that I most probably have polycystic ovaries. As I am trying for my second baby I am very worried that I am now infertile. I rarely have a period so I rarely ovulate if at all. Does anyone have any info about PCOS and does anyone know if an ultrasound scan is good way of diagnosing PCOS?

I have PCOS. I gave you a website that has tons of info and great advice. Exactly what type of info and advice are you looking for that it didn't have?

I wanted to find out if an ultrasound scan is a common way of diagnosing PCOS (aswell as having various blood tests)? What tests did you have to diagnose it?

None of my ultrasounds ever showed it. Most of the time a doctor will make the diagnosis based on the number of symptoms present.

My doctor diagnosed it approximately 20 years ago because I had several of the symptoms but it wasn't confirmed until 6 years ago. He was performing a C-section and after my daughter was delivered he told me "Now we know for sure. I counted 23 cysts on your ovaries and then stopped counting."

I had infertility problems for several years. But when I finally started seeing a fertility specialist I conceived during the first round of Clomid. So don't get too worried. Since you've already been through one successful pregnancy then I would say the chances are pretty good you can do it again. Going through a full pregnancy seems to improve the hormone balance in women with PCOS.

Check out that website. It really is great.

My gyn. Doctor (2 of them) have said most of my sympyoms point to PCOS but they want to do a scan and blood tests. When I was trying for my first child I had normal periods whereas now I hardly have periods at all so I am worried I won't conceive again.

If the reason for your lack of periods is hormonal then there's a good chance that a doctor can help correct that. The blood tests will show your hormone levels and the scan may show if there are cysts. Try not to worry too much. Don't assume the worst.

I found that a low-carb diet really helped my hormone levels. About 3 months after I started the diet I started getting regular periods and they've been like clockwork ever since. (BTW, the low-carb diet was recommended by that web site.)

Go to an endocrinologist (sp?) he will put you on metformin and if that is not enough to get pregnant he will give you fertility meds

I have PCOS. I had a very irregular cycle. My periods actually disappeared for over a year. Well recently I read a book about the sugar solution and went on a diet. I lost 15lbs and have had 2 periods since! People with PCOS are especially susceptible to insulin resistance and problems with sugar. Even though we may not be diabetic (yet) we can still have problems with sugar.

While trying to conceive, I highly recommend watching your sugar intake. Stick to foods that are low on the glycemic index. Seriously, I think it makes a huge difference! If you can find the book called 'The Sugar Solution' it has a whole chapter dedicated to PCOS. It's very informative and has definitely opened my eyes! Best of luck!
