I'm considering to copper repipe my home. The existing plumbing is galvanized pipe which are beginning to leak. I'm in the process of getting estimates for the job. What important questions should I ask the contractor when they're providing their estimate?

One of the most important questions is what type of copper is he going to use: There are three types that are OK for water piping Type M is the thinnest, Type L is next and Type K is the thickest. I would feel good about using type L throughout.

Ask for bids that also reflect repiping with PEX as an option.

I'm working on a bid right now where the material cost for the re-pipe in copper is $15,000 versus a Manifold/Homerun PEX installation of $9,000.

Just a thought.

Cost is always an important question but three references and are you insured are also good questions.

Along with the estimates for copper and Pex, get a estimate for PVC and CPVC plastic. When going into a investment of this size it's best to consider all options. Good luck, Tom
