Hi, my lease expired in the fall and my landlord and I never made any formal or verbal agreement as to a lease arrangement since (infact, I didn't hear from him until the beginning of April about it). At the middle of the month I was told I needed to move for my job, though I told him at the beginning of the month I was likely going to have to move. I told my landlord at the middle of the month I'd definitely be moving. What are the rules of 30 days notice at this point? He wants me to pay for another month, but I have zero contract agreement with him. And when he contacted me at the beginning of the month and asked to me to sign something, while he didn't say I had to move out (he is scared to lose me as a tenat) I said I'd likely be moving out then. Are there any general laws stating I am obligated to pay 30 days? Thanks.

You owe your notice IN WRITING so advising him in WRITING is your only protection.

Your state may have some specific laws on this, there should be some links at the top of this page or stickies on the main real esate page.

But you need to give them a 30 days notice, some areas will require that the full next month be paid, for example if you give notice on the 15th, they would expect the full next months rental. In other states you would pay for that 30 day.
If you did not give notice in writing, they can merely say they never received it, so it should be in writing. You do have a contract, it is verbal month to month rental, also read the terms of the lease, most have rules about what happens if this goes into a month to month rental and what erms my apply.

But yes, you are obligated to give a 30 day notice

Generally, when on a month to month lease, you have to give written notice covering one FULL rental period. So if your rnetal period is a calendar month, then you have to pay for the full month.
