    Bad tasting water from refrigerator
I have a one year old GE profile side by side refrigeratotor. Recently the water from the dispenser started to taste bad (like dirt). At first I thought it might be a bad filter so I changed it - no improvement. I then removed the filter (bypassed it) but the water tasted the same. Water from my sink tap and ice vubes from the refrigerator taste fine so I can only assume that the source of the problem is close to the dispenser itself. It's only the first glass of water that tastes bad. I'm thinking I may have some bacteria or something growing inside of the water line in the fridge door. Has anybody ever run into this problem? Is there some way to sanitze the water dispenser loop without taking the fridge apart? I was thinking of running a dilute bleach solution into the water feed line but I'm afraid I might damage some components inside of the system. Is there some less aggressive sanitizing method that anybody can suggest?

By the way I have well water -

    Thanks

Do you have your own water supply or is it supplied by a water department? Water from water companies should be treated with chlorine and tested to be safe from bacteria. Have you checked to see what the installer used for the water line that connects to the back of your refrigerator? Maybe it's something that's not recommended for potable drinking water like a rubber hose. Was the filter you changed the one in the refrigerator or one for you entire system? Some people aren't aware that usually there's one in the refrigerator itself.

Sorry I didn't see the note on the bottom about the well... It shouldn't hurt to run a chlorine/water mixture through your lines.

    Thanks -

I actually have a whole house (particulate) filter and a filter in the fridge (which I assume is some kind of activated carbon). The filter I changed was the one in the fridge.

I'll try the bleach / water mix next. I just have to figure out how to build a resivoir of some type to get it to flow into the feed line on the refrigerator.
