First, contact the creditor and find out what they are willing to do. A lot depends on how much you owe on the car.

Second, expect to play hard ball. The creditor wants the money, NOT the car, so they will not be in the mood to be generous.

That said, you may be able to get out from under the car debt without paying too much. Expect a major hit on your credit rating, however.

Ok, first remember they don't hae to allow you to do it, they want your money, and if they can't sell the car for enough money to pay it off, why should they suffer for your loan mistake?

But expect them to want you to pay some balance to take it back.

Remember they also can take it back, sell it and then sue you for the balance. And often you will owe almost as much after they sell it than you did before so you may be better off trying to sell it and pay the loan off.
