My daughter, who'll be 4 in July, has begun vomiting in the middle of the night. I'm sure if she wakes up when she does. But it seems to be one violent act and then it's over. This began a while back and doctors in our town (and we've seen over half of them) are clueless and continue to throw random drugs at her. It when on for about 2 weeks then stopped and now it's back. She seems to be fine during the day (never vomiting or complaining about stomach pains) it's just these occurrences which happen between 2 and 3 in the morning. We've removed all the toys from her room, bought her a new mattress. We're just at a loss of what could be causing it.

Any help on where to go next would be greatly appreciated.

Does she have any coughing or wheezing before it happens? My nephew did this when he would gag after not being able to breathe appropriately... he ended up having sleep apanea (sp?). Now he takes a breathing treatment before bed and sleeps just fine.

Hate to bring this up but has anything very upsetting happened to her, traumatic, someone hurt her, maybe a bad recurring dream? Certainly sound like it needs investigation.

Does she have a consistent bed time? Does she still need a nap?

My nephew does this when he is over tired.

Never any coughing, She does have a pretty constant bedtime and she does take a nap. Nothing traumatic has happened to her as far as I know. You never know at daycare, but I assume she's safe.

Our kids' nighttime ritual includes milk before bed - does yours? She may be lactose intolerant. I'm lactose intolerant, and my degree of lactose intolerance seems to go up and down, sometimes causing me to wake up in the middle of the night with nausea.

Pleeease don't assume anything where your child's safety is concerned. Ask some questions at day-care, see if they have noticed anything, a change in your child's behaviour... Anything!

Watch her play, is she hitting any of her dolls? Is she using any new words? How does she play with others? Sorry there is no easy way to ask these questions. But you really need to observe your child in play.

A 4 year old child doesn't get up at 3am to be sick, not on a regular bases, without there being a very good reason for it.

There's nothing out of the ordinary in her behavior. She really loves going to her preschool (day-care). I really don't think there's any cause for concern in that area. She doesn't get milk at night. She get's a sippy cup of water to go to bed with her.

Then perhaps it is time to call her Dr.

Don't know what else to suggest - you have my sympathy. I have a boy the same age and would hate to see something like that happening. Keep pestering the doctors!

That's the problem I'm sick of doctors telling me that the don't know. I've put the poor girl through so many tests, and medications. I'm trying other routes. On all those medical mystery shows it always ends with: "and then the mom starting asking people on the internet..."

I'd say keep trying different doctors different tests. It might be frustrating, but eventually it will turn up something

That's just it. I'm sick of doctors telling me they don't know. I'm looking for somebody who's heard of "Little Billies Disorder" and the only doctor that knows anything about this rare afliction is Dr. Whosisface in Brooklyn, or something. On all those medical mystery shows they always end the story with "and then the mom looked on the internet..." That's about where I am. That or I need to sleep through the night lol

Could she have reflux? I know when you lay down it can get worse. And in infants - it makes them throw up - mostly because after they eat - they are laid down.
I know you are sick of doctor's - but you could take her to a gastrointestinal doctor. They can perform a reflux test - which is - they will have her milk with a type medicine in it (has no flavor) - she will lay on a table and will be monitored for a period. (they will have a tv) then you walk around - come back and do it again. It is not painful - just boring and they have to lay still.
I don't know if this is a possibility, but you could always check it out.

It may be what she's eating at night. Does she eat something normally the night she vomits?

Keep checking with the doctors. You may even have to go out of your town and see a specialist if this keeps occurring.

Does she have a cold or anything like that because my son does this same thing no coughing just drainage and sometimes it is sour and stinks real bad and others nothing. Have you noticed if it happens after certain foods or drinks. Have the given her acid reflux meds.

I am thinking GERD (gastroesohpageal reflux disorder). Have you tried elevating the head of her bed 6-8 inches to see if this reduces the problem.

It could be celiacs disease. (intolerance to wheat and gluten) is she thin and tired. My son was the same and he had all types of tests and nothing could be found. Hes 8 now an perfectly healthy he stopped vomiting at 7. try not to worry too much it could be a phase. Also ask for a test for cystic fibrosis.

I know the last statement of ask about cystic fibrosis is scary I just went through that with my son. I said earlier in this list of comments that he does a similar thing. I did all these tests the tested everything you can think of on a 2 year old and nothing showed but they were stumped and just finally told me the it was toddlers diarrhea because he has that problem also but then just one day it all of a sudden stopped I would think about what exactly she is eatting and maybe give her some mylanta before bed or something and see if that helps I give it to both of my children when they wake up sick or a burbing "rotten eggs" does she do that?

I'm thirteen years old and my mom tells me iwake up I the middle of the night and throw and when I wake up I don't even know what had happened yesturaday. I don't know whybut I have a lot of stress from school.
