Collection agency collecting on an AMEX debt
Hi,
Five days ago I was contacted by a collection agency by phone regarding a debt I incurred on an AMEX card.
My first response was to ask them to please send me something in the mail with the specific amount and who they were collecting for. The debt collector told me that the letter was in the mail and that I had 28 days to dispute the charges.
Of course I was nervous but insisted on seeing something in writing before I make any kind of payment.
Today she called me on my cell while I was at work and left a message saying that I needed to return her call before 3PM. I tried calling twice but was put on hold and then I eventually gave up.
I have no problem working with the creditor but I won't give them any information or any money until I get some documentation saying they have a right to collect on this debt.
Should I send a letter requesting written information or are they obligated to send me a letter and I shall be receiving one soon?
Thanks so much for any advice,
JackWolf
