    Abandoned Property in NY
    I have an interest in two abandoned properties. Both properties has been abandoned for 3 years and both has delinquent taxes on them. Both properties are still owned by the owners. But one of the properties has an owner that cannot be located. The current address for that property is the property that is abandoned. The owners are also in their nineties. How can I locate them? The other property is owned by a church - the courthouse did give me their current address. I want to send them a letter but do not know what to put in it. What is NY's law on abandoned property? How can I find owners that are 90yrs old in age? Best way to write a letter showing interest in the property? Can anyone help with these questions?:o

    Hello Ra:

    I suppose the best way to say that I want to buy your property, would be to say that I want to buy your property.

    You don't think that you can somehow "claim" it because it isn't being used, do you? I don't think you can. However, if you want to know for sure, hire a NY real estate attorney.

    Simply say:

    I am interested in purchasing the property you own at... I am offering $x for the property. Please contact me if you are interested.

    There is no law on "abandoned property". However, properties that are delinquent in tax payments, may be seized by the county and sold at auction. You can check with the county for when those properties are scheduled for tax sale.

    Yes, I own some property in Atlanta, I get about 2 letters a month from people wanting to buy it,

    But you should get the last address on file of where the tax bills have been sent, so you go ( drive) over there and start asking for the person, find out if they moved, look if they own the property where the tax bill was being sent, and see if there is another addresss on that tax bill where the bills are going.

    Sometimes the person may have died and there is no address for them,
    Airmail still does not get to heaven, so you may keep a eye on it and see if it will sell at the annual tax auction that is held each year on property with past due taxes

    Rajean, I notice that Clough has brought your other question onto this thread.

    You can always try. But, the only way you will be able to do so would be to contact the owners as advised by others here. If the properties are taken by the county and sold at auction, again, you can try but be prepared to be outbid. It is very rare to have the opportunity to purchase a property for the cost of back taxes only.
