GFI not working and affecting many other outlets
My home has a small portion of the basement that was finished prior to our purchase. I am led to believe that the wiring probably wasn't done by a professional. Upon inspection prior to purchase all was good, however, over the last several years I have had trouble with different unrelated outlets throughout the house and have been told that this particular GFI outlet located in this area has been the problem. In the past it just needed to be reset and that fixed all the other outlets. My current problem is that this GFI will no longer test or reset and I have these same unrelated outlets not working. Is it possible the GFI just needs to be replaced and is this something I can do on my own and where would I get the instructions to do it? Thanks. It is of urgent concern now as one of these not working outlets is to an outside sump that keeps my house from floating away during the spring's wet weather. I really need it fixed ASAP and have a budget that better allows me a DYI.

Yes, you can replace the GFI with a new one. It's not difficult. Instructions come in the package. Be sure to get one that has load connections (to protect the "downstream" outlets).
