Hi,
I have a leak that is coming from my stack, it runs down the stack into my bathroom where the stack is exposed.

Once the stack goes through the ceiling into the attic it makes a 90 degree turn, runs horizontally for about 10 feet and then makes another 90 degree turn to go out the roof.

During the winter when it was well below freezing there was a big ice build up at the first 90 degree bend. I think that condensation may have built up there and then somehow leaked through the elbow joint.

I am not sure if this is the problem so I would like to get your opinion. Also is okay for a stack to make bends?

What is the material of the pipes? 90 degree bends are acceptable in vents.

Is the leak from the freeze/thaw cycle of the ice built up on the vent pipes? Is it still leaking? Is it leaking around the flashing where your vent pipe goes through the roof?

Thank you for replying. As far as I can tell the leak is not from around the flashing at the roof. All the ice build up was at the first 90 degree bend which is just above my bathroom. The second 90 degree bend is where it goes through the roof.

The pipe material is PVC (the black plastic material).

Hi Wayne,
Sounds like the ice expanded in the first 90 and opened up a joint or cracked the fitting. Either way that is where I'd start looking. If nothing else then stick a hose down the vent and track the leak back. Good luck, Tom
