My chihuhua/z- zu had a liter of two, a boy and a girl. The girl was born two times the size of the boy but now the boy has grown to double the size of the girl. She started to become lethargic and wasn't eating from the mom, so I bought her formula last Thursday. She was eating regularly until Sunday when she started throwing up the formula and seemed very wobbly and lethargic and had a runny nose and kept sneezing. She wa going to the restroom though, and had normal stools.I took her to the 24 hour emergency hospital and they checked her sugar (it was fine), and gave her an injection of amoxicillin. They gave me medicine to take home and give her twice daily. She hasn't thrown up at all since the injection and pretty much stopped sneezing. She perked up a lot the next morning and was playing with her mom and brother. Then on Tuesday (yesterday) she wouldn't eat at all and was shakey, wobbly and disoriented. She was also very lethargic and just laid there and shook. He eyes were glazed and red. I took her to the emergency again and a different vet examined her. He gave her an x-ray which showed no irregular things and did full bloodwork and found nothing except a little bit of dehydration. He said might have a neurological problem or just may not be thriving. Basically he found nothing and said to give it a couple days and see if she gets better. She's been eating today but is still vERY lethagic, shaking and breathing hard. I don't want her to suffer but I don't want to take her to another vet who will charge me $600 and give me no answers or help. What do I do? Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong with her? I am so scared and frustrated.

I think you should try again this time with a trusted vet during regular office hours. It shouldn't be so outrageously expensive. You allowed the mother to become pregnant, now you owe that puppy either proper medical care or a humane death.

I do hope you spare yourself further problems by having the mother spayed when the vet says she is ready. It will make life better for her, you, and everybody else. She and the puppies are paying a price for your neglect.

Wow.. um, exactly how was I neglectful? My dog didn't get pregnant by accident and I was taking her to the vet regularly following up to the puppies birth, the vet was also called at the birth. The minute I noticed she wasn't eating I bought her formula and when she got sick I took her to the hospital. The reason I took her to this emergency hospital is because it is one of the best in CA. Many of the normal vet's don't have the same equipment as this hospital. The money isn't the issue seeing as I paid double to take her to this specific hospital, my point was I didn't want to pay and get no results. Also, the puppy is about the size of my hand and I didn't want her to have to go through more trauma than she needed. I was asking for help... not a scolding. And for your information the puppy is doing a lot better, she is walking, teething, eating and not shaking anymore. I think it was just taking her body taking awhile to refresh itself from her illness. I also took her to my normal vet this morning and she said that the puppy just needed to continue to eat regularly and stay warm, but besides that she seemed to be fine. I have taken work off this whole week to monitor the puppy completely. I was asking for any tips on how to help the puppy in the days following the hospital visit.

You are saying you deliberately breed a mixed breed? Why?

I didn't. My dog Emma was the mixed breed (chihuahua-zu) and she mated with a boy chihuahua. The Vet said that they should turn out fine and would probably look like chihuahuas.. which they do.

Look, we have a huge problem in this country with more dogs than good homes. We slaughter 10,000,000 a year because of it, many in less than humane ways after a short, miserable life. It definitely sounds to me like you are part of the problem. The only responsible thing is to get her spayed before the next her next heat cycle in 6 months.

And once again, the others here that claim to know and love dogs are silent.

I am sorry, but this woman has done nothing wrong. She breed her dog, it was planned not an accident. Just because it's a mix breed that's wrong? Im sorry labman, you're an idiot. You should be happy the puppy is better if you love dogs so much. I am glad to hear that the puppy is back to her healthy self and thriving!

Why can't mutts be bred?
All purebred breeds are inbred.
Wouldn't mutts be a better choice because they

I was tempted to ignore this message but I will humor you...

No mutts are generally unhealthier as the so called breeders do not test for genetic disorders and diseases.

Not only that but there can be physical issues as well.
Take a Pug and a Dacshund for example,
Pugs have protruding eyes and many have health issues because of it.
Dacshunds have a lot of back issues do to their long spines.
Both can have issues with the patellas.

Breed the two together and you could end up with Bulging, weeping eyes, painful back problems and slipping patellas...

Why would I want to do that to a dog?

And it is called line-breeding you fool, look it up.

You know when I was growing we would always end up with mixed breed homeless dogs... because that's the breed nobody seems to want but you know what... they were healthy... had the dog for years... never got sick or needed to go to vet... so people..
