My house currently has a 200 amp Service Drop in the rear exterior which includes the 150amp Main breaker. THis supplies a 200amp Breaker box in the garage using 2 awg copper, 40 ft away (two open breakers).
We are in the last stages of weathering in a 1000 sq ft addition. I would like to upgrade the Main breaker to 200 amp and then run a 60amp circuit to a sub panel in the addition (30+ feet away) Addition has 3 bedrooms. 2 bath (includes Master bath with whirlpool tub.)

The existing 150 amp panel has the following already in use
(1 ea) 50a dual pole breaker
(2 ea) 30a dual pole breakers
(7 ea) 20a single pole breakers
(5 ea) 15a single pole breakers

1st is 60 amp enough?

4 awg copper for run to sub panel.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Need to know the total square livable footage of the house, list of all major electric appliances, KW of any heat load in the tub and does the tub maintain temp, water heater, type of heat, size of air conditioning. And what loads will be in the subpanel.

Total sq livining space is 1403 now and will be approx 2453 when complete.

Waterheater and Central Heat are Gas.

Pulls 110V 16 amp (20 amp breaker) Pump on Whirlpool Pump. Asks for an upgrade to 110V 30amp GFI if Heat installed. Will contact mfgr for KW load.


Subpanel will have the Whirlpool. Two Bathroom recepticles, fans and lights. Three bedroom recepticles and Ceiling fan/lights. 2 Exterior lights. And Hallway lights and recepticles.

Approximately 25 recepticles in total. 3 Ceiling fans/lights. 3 GFI recepticles (including 1 for whirlpool.) 2 exaust fans. 2 Vanity lights. 2 recessed lights. 2 hall lights. And two outside lights.

Smoke detectors will be fed from existing system that are ganged together fed from main in garage.

A 200 amp service is plenty large enough for the total load, I arrived at 88 amps without including the hot tub.

60 Amp for the subpanel is fine also, with # 4 copper wire you can actually give yourself a 100 amp feed to the subpanel.
