Need to add valve to one inch water pipe
I have a gravity fed water system which has a one inch water pipe sticking upward vertically to allow more free flow of water by allow air in the system. I want to close off that pipe, and make it a closed system to pressurized it with a pump.

The problem is the pipe is not threaded, and I see pipe threaders are not cheap. Especially just for one use.

I would prefer a valve so I can reopen the system in case of a situation where there is no electricity for an extended period, or the pump fails, and I am unable to replace it for a while.

    Any suggestion for this?

    Thanks!

    What material is the pipe?

Ah yes.. It is galvanized steel.

    Sorry I forgot that.

Can you remove the pipe and take it to have it threaded at a shop?

Can you rent a pipe die?

How about attaching a NIPPLE with a fernco coupling?

With a gravity feed, you don't have a lot of pressure. I would use a shielded Fernco and use a nipple or get a small piece of pipe threaded at 1 end only. Put the non threaded ends under the Fernco.

"and make it a closed system to pressurized it with a pump"...

It may not become a high pressure system by adding the pump, but the way I see it, it is so easy to just rent a thread cutter from any local tool rental store (and a wrench to hold against yourself when cutting the threads using the thread cutter) I would recommend going that route in the long run. Heck, I found an entire thread cutting system (1/2" to 1.25") for $73.00 on amazon ( https://www.amazon.com/Ratchet-Threa...d+cutter&psc=1 ). I'm sure a similar set can be rented for 1/2 that!

    Anyway, just thinking aloud!

Why bother with a valve at all when a secure cap would do?

Thanks for the responses. I will first try the Fernco shield, then that cheap thread cutting system if the first one does not work out well

I am afraid Fernco shielded coupling will not hold the pressure, as it is not designed to hold pressure. Also, not sure whether you can purchase Fernco coupling for 1" diameter pipe

If you do it right, you will do it only once. Have the pipe threaded, or buy pre-threaded nipple of desired size, and use threaded cap or valve to cap it off. All can be purchased in HD for few bucks.

Yes I guess you are correct. I will go for the pipe threader.

    Thanks again
