My usually bouncy, happy, full of life 1yo has suddenly become lethargic and timid. He has stopped going outside, eats very little food and appears lethargic. I think he may have been in a fight or trapped somewhere for a while - he has lost a claw and has injuries to his paws. All other signs are that he's OK. He's been like this for just over 24 hours.
Should I take him to the vet or has he just had the wind knocked out of his sails and will recover by himself if left to his own devices?

That must have been some fight he was in, you know it is their nature to protect their outside territory from other cats. My cat has notches in her ears for every fight she has been in and she is only four !

I would let him lick his wounds for another 24 hours before you become concerned.

One of the warning signs with the pet food recall is a sudden lethargic. Please confirm with menufoods.com that your not feeding her recalled pet food, it happaned to me, and if it isn't wait a day and see if she's feeling better, if not take to vet.
If you have been feeding her the bad food, it is crucial to take to vet asap!

I thought I'd let you know that Wallace seems to be returning to his 'old' self :-) He's been demanding love + purring madly when he gets it (which is often! ), wolfing down food and he's started going outside again :)
All in all I think he's well on the way to a full recovery.

Seems I spoke too soon :( Have just come back from the vets - I decided to take him because one of his paws had started to smell strange. It turns out he'd lost quite a few claws and was running a temperature - I feel like a rotten owner :( The vet thinks he may have been involved in a car accident - apparently it is quite common for there claws to get worn down on the road surface. Luckily he is all right besides the painful + infected paws - I have been given some pills + cream to get him back to full recovery.
Thought I'd share my outcome even if I am mortified that I didn't pick up on it sooner - hopefully it'll save another puss from waiting for treatment.
I'd like to add, in my defence, he was back to his usual bouncy, playfull self and didn't seem to be bothered by it at all - "brave little soldier" :)
