Overpaid! How do I correct a tax filing?
I'm a student from India and I filed my taxes on the last day. Since I was unaware of the Indian tax-exempt treaty of $5150, I did not mention it in the Itemized Deductions on my 1040NR-EZ and ended up paying much more tax than I ought to. How do I go about correcting my mistake to receive a much higher refund than I filed for?

    Please help!

    Thank you.

You will need to file an amended tax return to claim the difference. Document it all carefully.

What documentation do I need to attach? It's just a number to be changed on the line item.

Also do I wait till I get the original refund to file the 1040X or can I do that right now?

You do NOT have to wait for the original refund.

When you file the Form 1040X, attach a properly-prepared Form 1040NR-EZ with the word 'AMENDED' printed on top of the first page.
