    Contactor replaced
Contactor replaced on heat pump, the thermostat was also replaced without asking me. Mine was working fine and now I am being charged $158.70 for thermostat. It was a 2 pole contactor. Is this what had to be done or did he just want to make more money?

    What does a repair costs?
This is a tough question to answer accurately. A lot depends on the area you live in, the company, flat rate vs. time and material and many other factors. I have seen prices as low as $150 and as high as $300. The parts for this repair are pretty inexpensive. It is a great candidate for a do it yourself person or someone just looking to save a little cash.

Usually just 1 fails, Never seen both at same time, if windings of contactor shorted, thermostat would carry a heavier load, would have thought fuse in Air Handler would have gone first. If Thermostat had a problem and while checking Contactor voltage saw it was corroded, wore, beat. I would replace contactor to prevent a future call. Would show Owner Contactor? and Leave old Thermostat? If Mercury, would dispose of safely.

What was the reason for the service call? That may shed light on why he replaced the thermostat AND contactor.
