I have a leaky pipe under my upstairs bathroom sink, so have turned the water off and unfortunately need to wait a couple of weeks until I can hire a plumber. I'm getting a bad smell from the sink drain, and I'm thinking it's sewer gas.
Is there any danger from this or anything I can do temporarily to block the smell? I can put water in the sink and catch the drips, but am not sure what to do.

The best thing to do would be to disassemble the trap and stuff a rag in the opening to the wall.

I added a photo of my configuration - piping in under floor and it's a log house - what best to do with this? The hole is in the metal portion of the pipe at the elbow

Sewer gas can be dangerous for sure. You have a corroded trap arm. Simplest thing for the time being is to get some electrical tape and wrap the corroded part. Make sure some water is in the trap. Repair is actually an easy DIY job. Remove all the nuts. Remove the trap and arm. Replace with a PVC assembly from HD or Lowe's, $5 or less. You tube "replacing a sink trap". Plumber could do this in 30 minutesor less and YOU CAN TOO!!☺
