Im considering connection to town water for a house I am in the midst of purchasing in MA. It currently uses well water but that needs a new filtration system, softener and reverse osmosis thing. I have been advised by multiple well companies to research the cost for town water. So, I am trying to price out how much the total job would be to connect to town water including digging, laying pipe, labor, parts etc? The town said they require 1,500 for connection fee plus meter. Does anyone have a range of how much it could cost?

Personally, I would ask the Town you plan to hook up to... rather than people on the internet that don't have a clue what it would cost where you are.
Contact the town for what they charge to hook up, and call three local contractors to get estimates for what it will cost to get it from their to your house.

Price for such a job varies by location. Call three local plumbers and get three free estimates. That should give you an idea what is involved. Ask lots of questions and then compare the three for the best price

One more detail: connecting to City water may - and most likely will - require filter and water softener, and I am certain, it will require Reverse Osmosis system for the best quality water as well

Milo... in the NE maybe not... our water isn't as hard or as bad as The SW has to live with. For the most part we have pretty good tap water that's not hard. Though actual quality does vary municipality to municipality.

Yup, no filter requirements in MA. Water quality is regulated quite strictly here, but some homeowners do ask us to install sediment/basic carbon filter which is never a bad idea!

I am in a high limestone area near the MA border with NW CT. I realize you want to change to town water, but I wanted to say that I have a well, and a water softener (with a whole house filter). It's a Pelican brand of softener - almost 3 times the cost of a typical Home Depot one. It's small, stainless, I was able to carry it, easy to plumb, uses NO electricity, and NO salts. It turns minerals into crystals so they don't calcify inside pipes. It never needs maintenance. Worth every penny. I like to give them free advertising any time I can!
