    Line 18 of 1040X
So we are amending our taxes and are stuck on line 18. Do we put the amount we were owed from last 1040 or do we put what has been returned to us? We only got a portion of what we asked for since we messed up we had to fix it, but when we put the changes we only get 700ish back but from the last taxes we are still owed a little under 4,000. Do We add what we haven't been paid from other tax forum?

Line 18 of Form 1040X says "Overpayment, if any, as shown on original return or as previously adjusted by the IRS." It seems the IRS adjusted your original over-payment (lowered the amount), so that's the amount you enter here. You should also use the IRS's corrected amounts for all entries in Column A, lines 1-15.

Ebaines answers are impeccable; I have nothing to add.

This probably doesn't impact your situation, but just in case... page 5 of the instructions to form 1040X state that only your name, address, and TIN should be entered on page 1 if you are amending one of the NR-series, or switching from a 1040-series to a NR-series, or vice versa. You should also only enter a reason on page 2. No other information should be entered. This is quite new, so thought I would point it out.

I do not do that when I amend to or from the Form 1040NR. I complete the Form 1040X.

Hi AtlantaTaxExpert. Until recently I did the same. Turns out you shouldn't. Who knew? How bizarre?

    SunTaxFla,

I have heard that the Form 1040X should not be completed, and in fact I did submit one amendment following that direction. It got REJECTED. Henceforth, I complete the Form 1040X, and I have never had one rejected since.

This is a case of "following the rules/instructions and being punished" versus "following common sense and being rewarded".

Until the IRS rejects the completed Form 1040X, I will continue to complete them.

Just being nosy. I use Ultratax, which is new to me. The program alerted me to the change in question. I think my old software would have let me fill out the 1040X, though not sure. Nice talking to you. Do let me know if you have questions. I am a CPA with over 20 years' experience in international tax matters (foreign in US and US abroad).
