I got the drain to start unscrewing with drain wrench/dumbbell in fiberglass shower in a manufactured home but then it just turned and turned. Finally, I was able to unscrew it enough to see the threading but now it just turns again without coming completely out. I tried to pull up and unscrew it at the same time with vise grips but it won't come out. How do I get it out the rest of the way without damaging the fiberglass around the hole? What is holding it in there? I cannot access the underside of the shower.

It may have been a drain with a large nut on the bottom and the tailpiece pushes onto the stub. You loosened it enough but now the nut just turns with the drain tailpiece.

Do you know how I could remove that?

Is this a 2" shower drain? This is important for us to know. A picture would also help us to give best advise.

If it is a 2" plastic drain and nut you may be able to use a dremel tool or plunge cutter tool with a saw bit to CUT the drain using vertical cuts and basically "split" the drain and if you can be VERY careful, you can cut the nut, too, but this is not and easy job and if you screw up and cut the shower base, you are SCREWED! Further, once you get the old drain out, you would usually need to access the underside of the drain to install a new drain assembly. Luckily, WING-TITE makes a shower strainer that can be installed from the top, but you'll need to get the old drain assembly off first.

That sure looks like 1 1/2" drain to me... It is a tough one. Can you get under it ? Is there a crawl space ? Is it on 2nd story ?

Problem is that there is a nut under that plastic pan. That nut is probably spinning. You could carefully cut the flange to pieces - but you still have to pull it up and that nut will prevent you from pulling it through the opening in the pan
