I have a Santa Fe dehumidifier that has worked well for two years, but now when it turns on it trips the breaker. Any ideas what's causing this?

Hot shorted to ground, bad compressor overdrawing breaker capacity.

With an ohm meter you can know for sure in a few seconds. It could have a tight compressor or a bad capacitor. You can fix either problem very easily if you have a meter. The first thing you do is to ohm out the compressor and find out if it is shorted to ground and the windings are good. If not, you can fix it.

Look at the compressor. You should see a brand on it. There are only a couple of manufacturers. I just Googled Santa Fe dehumidifiers and there are lots of hits.

I seriously doubt that it's worth changing out the compressor. Are you sure? A bad capacitor can make it seem like a bad compressor. Checking it with an ohm meter is the only way to know for sure. If it has a bad compressor then you will have to junk it for parts and get a new unit unless you can weld in a new compressor, vacuum it down and install new driers, including a suction drier if it burned out; otherwise, the new one will fail, too. Plus, you will have to match the refrigerant, and if it was R-22, the liberals had that high-efficiency refrigerant banned and you will have to use a substitute or propane, a low-efficiency "black-market" substitute. Just buy a new unit.
