    Answer My Word Problem
A can of mushrooms costs 80 cents and a can of fruit cocktail costs 90 cents. How much money did Mr. Franz spend? Express your answer in terms of x in dollars. Where the starting equation is 2x+2.

    Well, the answer key says: 170x + 160 over 100 dollars but I'm wondering if it's 180x + 160 over 100.

Show your working then we'll see what's going on.

How you get there is more important than the result..

I think its VERY helpful. You learn nothing if someone else does your homework for you. And this site does not do your homework so you don't have to.

School work and learning is based on building on what you have already learned... if you don't learn this its going to cause you problems understanding future problems and assignments.

You can't expect to be able to learn Calculus until you have learned how to master Algebra and Trigonometry for example. And you can't be expected to learn those until you have mastered the basic forms of math.

Sorry, but the problem as you wrote is incomplete - we can't help if you leave out a significant portion of the question. Specifically, you haven't defined what the term 'x' is. From your second post is seems that they are asking for how much was spent if the man bought 2x cans of fruit cocktail plus 2 cans of mushrooms - is that right? I'm guessing that's why you think the answer ought to be (180x+160)/100. If that's what the question was then yes, you are correct. But if the question was to assume that the man bought x number of cans of mushrooms plus x+2 cans of fruit cocktail, then the book's answer is correct. Again - its impossible to tell without knowing how the problem was worded.
