Love is not allowed and as the teens graduate one gets a special job he becomes a librarian and he stops taking his medicine to find out what he is truly missing out on. Later in the movie he takes a journey to the edge. Towards the end of the movie he actually jumps off the edge to discover there is land below the land he was living on.

I read this last year on my kindle I think MystMoonstruck is spot on it's the first in a four part book series called The Giver quartet
