Return air chamber under the furnace
My furnace is in my garage. It sits on one end of a long 24"HX30"D X7'w platform which has at the end a 16"X32" with cold air return grill opening into the house.
This long chamber/platform is drywalled on sides but has wooden planks on top except where the furnace is mounted. There is no duct connecting the vent and the furnace.
The house was built in 1972. Is this allowed? So far no issues but should I be concerned that air from garage may enter the house through this?

    Would appreciate your advice. Thanks.

You could possibly get some gasses from the garage, depends on how well it is sealed. The only return is in the house, how does the hot air get to the house?
"There is no duct connecting the vent and the furnace"-what does this mean

Sorry for not making my description clear.

There is a hot air duct above the furnace. The Furnace and 2 boilers sit on this platform/air chamber. There are 2 openings. One is the under the furnace with a filter. The other opening is at the other end and opens into a grill that is just above the floor in the living room. What I meant was within this chamber, made of 2X4 and drywall, there is no metal duct connecting the 2 openings. It would be difficult to run one because of cross braces and framing. Apparently that setup was allowed years ago when it was built. I will check the sealinng on the chamber but am wondering if this setup is allowed now and if there is anything I else I can/need to do. Thanks.
