So we were set to be married he got caught in lies I told him I need the truth and he called the marriage off... a few days later after I agreed to get the ring back to him he said keep the ring and he hopes I wear it and think of him. Now we are going to court over this, not only did he call it off but he later said keep the ring so my question is, can I legally keep it since he called it off and later told me to keep the ring? You were willing to return it before, so return it now, and save the hassles. He lied about this as he lied about other things before I guess.

I don't know the laws in your State, but in most places an engagement ring is a promise to marry. If the marriage does not take place, regardless of who ended it, the engagement ring goes back to the one that gave it and paid for it. Marriage is a contract. An engagement ring is a precursor to entering into said contract. It is contingent on that contract being fulfilled. In other words, the marriage didn't happen, so you can't keep the ring.

Why are you wanting to take this to court? Just give him back the ring. He paid for it, it belongs to him because the marriage didn't happen. And no, it doesn't matter that he called it off, he has the right to change his mind just like you do.

Just give him back the ring and forget about him. Stop prolonging things by taking it so far as to go to court just to keep a ring that you likely will never wear. I mean really, why would you wear it, to remind you of his indifference to you? Why?

Just give it back and move on.

I always wonder, if someone knows someone is lying, why do they 'need the truth?' That implies to me that they never actually knew if the other person was lying or not.

I saw an episode of a cop show once in which the wife 'knew' that her husband was seeing another woman, and hired a hit man to kill him. The woman he was seeing was an event planner, and they were discussing a surprise party. Trite? Not really. Just an exaggeration of what goes on all day long.

The need to hear the "truth" is really silly. If you wish to end it, end it. It may be you were wrong about the lie? (but maybe not)

If you have it in writing, or in front of witnesses, that he told you to keep it. Then you may keep it. (although he can sue you for it, and you would have to fight it out in court)

Actually what happened is he was drunk while I was at work and I received weird messages saying it is over then three days later he said it was a woman friend of his messaging me on his phone then changed his story 3 or four times. I was not calling off the relationship at all, I was ready to move in with him and after all the BS I just told him I need the truth and once I finished school and extern my plans were to move in and be married on December 19, 2015. There is messages from him stating it is over then 10 days later he said to keep the ring. I truly fell in love with this man and just glad I found out what type of person he was before I moved

I would have been more concerned over him being drunk (seems like it was common place ?) then the actual messages. If you read all of the sad relationship stories, a theme with many was.

I was drunk...

In most courts (not knowing where you are at) he will be entitled to the ring back, but not other ordinary boyfriend/girlfriend type gifts.
Often the man will not actually sue in court (but it does happen) esp if he is still making payments on the ring.
