I was "solicited" a job opportunity from a local school to teach music to children. They are required to get a live scan from me. I was convicted of a misdeameanor sex offence 14 years ago that was expunged and another one 20 years ago. Neither offence involves children. Will they show up on the live scan, will the employer see them or do they fall off after 7 years or is this going to haunt me for the rest of my life?
Possibly bigger question. If I am in fact denied the teaching position, can the sheriffs dept and and/or the employer SHARE this info "privately" with the community or my current employer who are unaware? Is it better to avoid the live scan altogether in this paranoid, neurotic American, uptight culture?

Expunged doesn't mean deleted or gone, it only means it doesn't show up for superficial checks. Courts see it, the police see it, the government sees it, and it will show up for certain background checks. . So yes in some ways under certain situations every crime you was ever convicted of will show up.

Actions have consequences. So its NOT paranoid, neurotic American, uptight culture that doesn't want people with any sort of sex offence around our kids because of the rate of recidivism.Its good upstanding and kind people that manage to make it through their entire lives without getting arrested or convicted that wants to know who is around their kids, SO don't made snide remarks about them and drop the attitude.

You made your own choices... and yes you did your time for them... but they still happened and nothing will change that.
And yes schools these days do a more thorough check than they used to because people that managed to get hired that had managed to hide certain prior convictions had committed new crimes. Many have made the news more than a few times just in my area..

For teaching jobs in schools, it is (most likely) show up. The one from 20 years ago, (you did not say expunged) so it will show up for sure. The newer one, even though expunged, the record exists and normally for sex offenses they will show up for teaching.

Also criminal convictions are not "private" they are public information and anyone that knows of your convictions are free to inform others. Many sex offenders today are on a public registry.
