Pay tax (work in NJ and live in NY)
    Hi,

I am an international student on the F1 - visa. I arrived this August. I receive a scholarship from my university in New Jersey however, I live in Brooklyn. My university takes federal and NY, NJ taxes from my income. My questions are about the tax refund, should I file tax refund form for both of the states? Why I should pay state tax for both of them.

    Thank you in advance.

You must file tax returns for BOTH New York and New Jersey.

However, New York will give you a tax credit (dollar-for-dollar) for taxes withheld and paid to New Jersey, so you are NOT paying taxes twice on the same income.

Recommend you use a competent tax professional for the state tax returns to ensure this credit is requested when filing.
