Is it normal to give a 21 day old newborn gas medication each time before you breast feed?

Gas and bloating can be very uncomfortable for newborns and as far as I know this is often suggested.

However, our nurse will be here shortly to give you a more definitive answer !

I wouldn't say it's "normal." Mom should adjust her diet by avoiding foods that make baby gassy. You may need to keep a food diary and compare your diet with baby's symptoms.

Many foods such as broccoli and cabbage can cause baby to be gassy, sometimes dairy will as well.

It is unusual to have it given on such a regular basis. Gas medication should be one of the last options taken when something is needed. What else has been tried? Is baby exclusively breastfed? What signs are being noticed that lead the parents to believe baby needs medication? Was this suggested by the baby's doctor? Are there any underlying medical conditions?

I have never heard of this. While that isn't enough to decide whether it's normal, I think it is enough to classify it as unusual. I am assuming that your daughter, the mother of the child, has been consulting her doctor about this and she's been told to do this.

I did a quick bit of research and found that this is suggested if the child is overly gassy for one reason or another.

I have a general piece of advice. You shouldn't take or administer anything medicinal, including over the counter drugs, unless instructed to by a doctor. This goes doubly so for a newborn child or any child that is quite young, 3 and younger. Unless you know what the medication does and are comfortable that it won't cause any adverse reactions.

If you are REALLY concerned then talk to you daughter (in law?) about it.
