I am installing a shower/bathroom in my basement. I have a cast iron drain pipe stub sticking out of the concrete floor. What is the best way to attach a new shower drain to this drain pipe. I will ultimately be building a concrete shower pan for custom tile install. Thank you.

You purchase cast iron shower drain head that slips directly over the cast iron pipe. Tighten up 3 stainless steel bolts and you are ready to go. See the attachment.

Is this a shower drain or is it a floor drain. Suspect it is just a floor drain unless this area was roughed in for a bath.

It is a shower drain already roughed in and leads over to the 4" waste pipe for the toilet. There is also a floor drain a few feet away that the HVAC system is draining into.

Should I be busting out some of the concrete and cutting the pipe lower to get the head lower? Or, since I am building up a mortar shower base... just build up around this drain? Thanks.

For the Cast Iron shower drain head to fit in - and to have the flat part of the bottom of the shell to be at the same lever as the existing floor - you would need about 2" a space around the pipe and about 2" deep.

Yes, you could build it up with mortar, but that would bring your shower floor ( an the curb ) another (about ) 2" higher.
