I remember only the beginning of the story: a librarian - who lives in the books and her favourite book is Rebecca, and a little bit crazy- gets pregnant by a soldier(I don't remember if it was set in the 1940's, but probably was) and brings up their daughter alone until she dies when the girl is about 17-20. The girl then starts working at a luxury hotel (in Palm Springs maybe?) and starts to see a rich boy who stays with his family.

I am not sure whether this is a movie or a book and I might have mixed up the daughter part, but the librarian with her favourite book is for sure.
