I have decent pressrue in the house, but I did not hear the pressure switch kicking on and off as it used to. I went out side and checked and the switch points are staying closed, and the pump is running all the time. I can shut off the electric, and open the points by hand, then when I turn on the electric again they stay open, but when I turn on the water they close back up, and when I shut the water off, they stay closed, and the pump continues to run.

I know that the points are supposed to open back up when the pressure in the tank get to a certain amount, but the points don't seem to want to open back up on their own.

Possible problems I think, Let me know your oppioun.

1. Hole In casing causing it to loose prime, and run all the time?

If this was the case, the points would close as soon, as I turned the electric back on, because the pressure would have been lost out the hole in the casing, not just when I turn on the water, and let the pressure off.

2. Pressure tank has a hole in it, and lets the pressure out, keeping the points on, and the pump running?

Again if this was the case, the points would close as soon as I turned the electric back on, because the pressure would have been lost out the hole in the pressure tank , not just when I turn on the water, and let the pressure off.

3. The Pressure switch needs adjustment or is bad?

Do the Pressure switchs go bad?

How do you ajust them?

The pressure switch has two adjustment thingys, one large one with a sprngs, and a nut, and one smaller one with a spring and a nut, side by side in front of the points. The pressure switch dose not look burnt or corroaded, or anything, and the points look mostly clean. The pressure switch is probably about 7 years old.

Please if anyone can help I need it, I am quite handy, and can fix most things around the house, but I don't know that much about wells, and pressure switchs.

Hey Wiz, What's your switch set at ? 20/40? 30/50? When the pump keeps running what does the pressure gage read? When you shut the pump off does the pressure fall? The pressure gage is one of the best diagnostic tools a pump system has and yet it's not mentioned in your complaint. It sounds like the switch might be bad. I wondered about the check valve but don't know if you have a pressure drop when the pump shuts down. Here's how to adjust your pressure switch.
First turn off the power at the breaker box, then pull the cover off the pressure switch and you will see two spring loaded bolts secured with nylon nuts. One tall, one short. To increase the cut in pressure, turn the nut on the tall bolt down. To increase the cut out pressure,(that's the one that will give you more pressure) turn the nut on the short bolt down.

Bad switch, went and got a new one, and new nipple & pressure gauge, and pressute switch. Dumb me bought a 40/60, when I should have bought a 20/40, and it took me an hour to ajust the 40/60 so it would run 20/40, but it works kicks on at 20, kicks off at 40.

After I come in, and was done with it, I wonder if I could have just ajusted the old one, and got it working. I bet nothering wrong with it either, just wore, and out of set.

Anyhow I got a new switch, and a gauge that works, and water with good pressure, and a pump that kicks off when it should.
