How can I get my two kitchen ceiling lights working properly?
Hello everyone... Here is my problem and it is baffling me no end. I am replacing two kitchen ceiling fixtures, which I have done several times before through several renos. In the past I simply did one light at a time and matched the coloured wires with no problems whatsoever. This time as a result of almost dropping the first light, the grommets pulled free and the fixture wires from the old light pulled free exposing THREE coloured wires... Black, white, and red... RED? I had never ever noticed the red wire before but obviously I had it connected correctly before since the two lights worked perfectly. I ignored the red wire and connected the new fixtures... black to black... white to white, and capped off the red. Now... Each light has its own on/off switch with dimmer and should work independently , but... I turned on the first switch and BOTH lights came on... the other switch does nothing. Needless to say that RED wire is the culprit and I have tried I think every combo to get them working correctly. Only the one outlet has the RED wire... the other has only black and white. Sorry to be so long winded... can anyone help?

Sounds like Black is for 1 light an the red is for the other light. I bet the one switch has a red on it and the other a black? Good Luck
