    Vinyl siding incorrectly installed?
    > Not sure where to begin with my question, but here goes. About a year ago,
    > I had my old cedar shingle siding removed and new Crane 5" vinyl siding
    > installed. Since then, I've been living a nightmare! The noises my house
    > makes are unbelievable! I get three different types of noise: 1) sounds
    > like wind going through my attic and lifting my roof (even on days when
    > there is little or no wind), 2) loud popping sounds like nails are popping
    > out of something, 3) sounds of wood cracking. I've lived in my house 28
    > years so I'm used to the normal expansion/contraction sounds. These sounds
    > are brand new and started after I had the siding installed. The wind noise
    > is more prevalent at dusk so I'm assuming it's some kind of contraction
    > noise that was never there before. The loud pop or crack sounds happen
    > anytime and occur sometimes at night and wake me out of a sound sleep.
    > I've had the siding installer come out several times and inform me there
    > is nothing wrong with his
    > installation. I've also had a roofer come out to see if something may be
    > wrong with my roof (other than I discovered my Certain Teed shingles are
    > failing after only 11 years. . But, that's a whole different story). The
    > majority of these noises sound like they are taking place in the attic
    > (no, there are no animals up there). Any suggestions who I can contact
    > next about this problem? I didn't use the cheapest contractor but a reputable one.
    >
Do you think taking down some of the siding and
    > leaving it off for a few days to see if the noise stops, would be a good
    > idea? Would a home inspector be able to pinpoint my problem?
    >
    > Thanks for any help you can give.

Having limited experience with vinyl siding is sound like the nails might have been set to deep. Siding should be nailed loosely so that as it heats /cools the nails will not bind it as it expands /contracts. -- Savage

Attic noise, did they install vinyl under the soffit (spellling) of the house, and perhaps add additional vents that was not there before that allows for better air flow (unfinished attics are to have air flow in them)

Your siding installer is less than impartial, his installation is likely faulty. Nails were driven too deep and soffit vent area is not correct.
