    Need help reading an old permit, Los Angeles
    Regarding los angeles permits: a hypothetical 2 unit addition to a single family home. Would the inspection/permit list "2 kitchen sinks, 2 lavs," etc, or would inspector also check the original single family, and list "3 kitchen sinks, 3 lavs," etc? Would it be different in 1985?

    We have no idea as to what was required or written 30 years ago. Typically the permit would list what the new work would cover. They may list all old plumbing to justify a larger septic system.

    Permit for 2 added units would list only sinks that were added in 1985 during that 2-unit addition. When you purchase plumbing permit, you pay for each NEW plumbing fixture you add, not for the existing ones. If there was no work done in the existing kitchen, Inspector would have no reason to inspect that kitchen.

    Not sure what is the purpose of your question, but .... if there is an issue with number of sinks on your property, than City knows there are 3 sinks - even though the new, (1985) permit shows only 2 sinks. When your main house was originally built, permit was issued for 1 sink. That permit is still on file with the City. Based on this information, City assumes that one working kitchen sink is already present. They add the two new ones to arrive on total number of sinks.

    In the opposite scenario - if the existing sink was for what ever reason removed - than your house would be now classified as "inhabitable space." You should put that sink back to bring it back to "habitable" status. Habitable space is a space that has working kitchen sink and bathroom, among other requirements.
