Do you mean breastfeed? If so, as long as you can, at least six months and even longer. The baby will benefit very much.

As Wondergirl said, there are potential benefits to both baby and to you to breastfeed for an extended time. There are some cultural differences, but many women will breastfeed for a year or more. In some countries, children might still receive milk from the mother for a few years, along with eating other foods.
It will vary depending on the individual woman and cultural norms. Even a short time will provide some benefit.

However when the child is old enough able to walk over and use words to ask for it... then perhaps its been going on too long.

Some of my LaLeche League buddies still nursed their four-year-olds.

And I consider people that do that more than a bit weird. But then there are some that parade around nude in front of their children well into puberty and beyond and I consider that beyond weird too.

Breastfeeding is just a normal fact of life. Since I have been here, it is just done publicly, no one even pays it any attention.
