Are they painted? Wood or metal? What color are they now? What color do you want to paint them?
Oil based paint not necessary. Latex is fine, but a good quality, so it covers well. Gloss would be typical for kitchens and bathrooms, but I don't like it, and there are several types (semi-gloss, matte, etc.) that you should go check out in the paint dept.
Good brush. NOT applied thickly. Remove doors and drawers.
Sand previous paint and wipe down with thinner.
Paint in several directions dryly, then smooth out in one direction.
Peer at it when dry to see if it needs a second coat.
I just finished 52 cabinet doors or drawer fronts on a house we had for sale-52!! I sanded each one, wiped with mineral spirits, let dry, 2 coats of rolled on primer, 2 coats of Behr satin exterior paint, 2 coats of Minwax water based poly, rolled on with a foam roller. Cabinets looked great, sold the house in 11 days.
I use same method as ma0641. I usually make cabinet frames 3 tones darker then doors. Also use darker color for trim work.
