I'm having a new boiler system installed in an old office building in Ukraine. I'm trying to avoid replacing the existing radiators. But I'm told they are full of sludge and will destroy the boiler. We will install a filter before the electrical boiler, but our designer say this won't last long. There are 300 radiators and to take each one off will also cost a lot of money and probably end up having to replace the piping.


One option I'm thinking is to install a water tank before the filter, with input and output pipe near top of the tank. I'm hoping that as the hot water passes through the tank the sludge will fall to the bottom. We can clean the tank after the winter, or during if necessary.


Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

I would suggest flushing the system after you disconnect/remove the old boiler, but before you install the new boiler system. Then, if you are still concerned, your idea of a "sludge tank" sounds reasonable to me!
