Is it ever OK to have 2 hots in a switch box, 1 for each swicth? How about if 1 hot powers both switches and the other is junctioned securely in the same box, is that OK?

Either condition is fine. However, the norm is to use one supply to feed both switches via a pigtail arrangement.
