I purchased a kitchen faucet on line today. The description says for 3 hole installation. The photo of the item looks exactly like the one I currently have. Also, I looked underneath the sink and to me it appears there are only two lines going upward. I don't know much about this, but I had asked others and was told this unit could be used even if there were only 2 holes as the deck plate would cover the extra one. This is only the faucet and not a separate spray piece. Will have a plumber do it, but wanted to ask if this type faucet would work for my sink. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Most are configured with 3 holes. If you have a pull out spout that is the 3rd hole. The other two are for the water supply. If you have a fixed nozzle, the 3rd hole would be covered and the faucet held down on the 2 sides.

As stated above: most sinks have 3 holes. You can buy faucet that uses 1, 2, or 3 holes.

Faucets usually come with 8" base plate. If you buy single column faucet so it uses only 1 (middle) hole and plate will cover the other 2 holes. If you buy faucet that utilizes 2 holes ( left and right ), again, you use that plate to cover the 3rd, middle, hole.

I plain language, the plate makes sure you can use that particular faucet on various configurations sinks.

So in your case, you should be OK with your new faucet
