I am building a shower in my basement. My plumber said that I can use the existing toilet drain (toilet has been moved to a new location) for the shower drain without having to break up the concrete, by simply installing a adapter. But all that I have read says that a shower drain requires a P trap.

Any thoughts?

Hey Mike,

First of all I want some of that stuff your plumber's toking on. To do it his way you would be left with a direct open line to the sewer. Sewer gas is hazardous to your familys health and the methane content is explosive.
Here's what you'll have to do. Break up the concrete and remove the closet bend. You will be left with a open pipe. Reduce down to 2" PVC and extent a 2"PVC pipe to where you want your shower base to set. Now install a 2" PVC trap and raiser exactly where you wish the shower drain to go. Make sure the trap raiser is at least 4" over the floor line and patch the broken cement, including around the trap raiser. When the cement cures You are now ready to set the shower base.
