No. Sure it's not a 150? that is very common. What is the rating for the furnace?

The current code requirement is for 60 amps. This has been the requirement for quite some time. If you have a main breaker panel I suspect that you are at the 100 amp service.

Prior to the current level, a residence was required to have a minimum of 60 amp service.

Please note, you do not add up the various sizes of the breakers in the panelboard box to determine the size of your incoming service.

Are you sure that you have a Main Breaker panelboard and not a Main Lug panelboard?

Right for what?

To answer your first question... it doesn't sound right. 100 amp furnace breaker tells me you either have a large heat pump or electric heat. And a 50amp main just won't cut it. Post a picture of your panel (close up) with the main breaker clearly visible.

A 50A lighting main is perfectly fine. It's obvious this is some sort of split service, or possibly a split-buss panel. The 50 is obviously not the main main, it's only one of the mains.
