I am replacing a ceiling fan/light kit fixture with a chandelier. From the elec ceiling box there are 4 wires:black, white, red and copper. The new fixture has only 3 wires:black, white and copper. I connected the blacks together and whites together. I grounded the copper wires to the box and green screw.
What do I do with the red wire?
I know it is a hot wire. Should it be added to the black wires?

Assuming that the light of the fan/light was controlled by the switch and the fan was controlled by the pull chain, also assuming that the switch now controls the new light, simply cap the red wire with a wire nut.

Yes, your assumptions are correct. So, I capped the red wire but the light does not work.

Are these the only wires in the ceiling box?

Are you sure there aren't 2 switches? If not, disconnect the ceiling black and connect the red to the light black. What happens? Tell us how the switch is wired, it may be switch looped but not marked. Good reason to write everything down.
